Optical Follow-up of the XMM Cluster Survey: The XCS-NOAO Survey

Overview

The XCS-NOAO Survey obtained KPNO and CTIO 4m mosaic images of ~500 X-ray clusters serendipitously detected in XMM-Newton observations. The X-ray cluster candidates are from the XMM Cluster Survey (XCS), which provided X-ray cluster detections (z < 1.5) over 500 square degrees of the sky. The MOSAIC multi-band ground-based imaging provides photometric redshifts and in cluster X-ray luminosities and temperatures to be estimated. The combined NOAO and XMM data help to pin down the evolution of the X-ray luminosity-temperature relation. Simultaneously, the NOAO data probe cluster formation and cluster galaxy evolution through the interplay between the cluster gas and the galaxies over the last 8 billion years.
