These images are provided by the GOES satellites. The wavelength band is centered near 10 microns and shows cloud tops in the middle and upper troposphere. Some amount of cirrus could be present at higher altitudes which would not show up in these images (this high altitude cirrus can be detected with the 6.7 micron GOES image).
