Title: Complementing Gaia from the ground: the DANCe survey
Abstract: We propose to obtain new epoch wide field images of 6 young nearby associations with DECam. The time difference with archival NOAO, ESO, CFHT & UKIRT wide field images (up to 12 years) will allow us to compute accurate transverse velocities down to <0.5 mas/yr accuracy, or <1 km/s at the distance of these associations. These measurements will complement the Gaia mission i) down to the planetary mass regime; ii) in young deeply embedded regions where Gaia will be blind. These observations will allow us: a) to derive a complete census based on a kinematic selection of members; 2) perform a statistically significant study of the IMF; 3) study the internal dynamics of each group separately, and perform a comparison of groups of various ages, metallicities, densities and structures. Ultimately, complementary radial velocity measurements (to be requested in the future) will give us a complete picture of the 3D space motions within young associations, \bf in a luminosity range that Gaia will not reach.
