Title: Galaxy and Mass Evolution via Deep u-band Imaging in the Deep Lens Survey

Abstract: Deep u-band photometry can powerfully leverage existing deep 0.4- 1 (micron) multi-band imaging by enabling many studies, including novel uses of z ~ 3 Lyman-break galaxies. We propose to use DECam to image 8 deg^2 in two fields of the Deep Lens Survey to u_AB=26.5- 27.3 (5\sigma). The u-band data would complement an existing BVRzJK data set, enabling science that includes: 1) Observing the dark matter distribution and dust absorption as a function of redshift using tomographic magnification of Lyman-break galaxies. 2) Studying the influence of black hole feedback near the QSO/Seyfert boundary. 3) Selecting the low-z analogs of passively evolving galaxies (BzK galaxies'') to constrain models of their formation and evolution. These deep u-band data, along with the existing Deep Lens Survey data and the improved photo-z catalogs, will enable many other investigations in the combined survey. After a brief proprietary period, the u-band data and the derived catalogs will be made public along with the DLS public data release.
