Title: Sifting the SuperWASP extra-solar planet candidates
Abstract: Most extrasolar planets have been discovered by doppler techniques. While these observations are interesting for statistical purposes, they tell us almost nothing about the planets themselves. However, 9 objects are known to transit their host stars, and for these the orbital inclination is therefore known. In these cases the mass-radius degeneracy can be broken telling us much about these objects and allowing confrontation of competing planet formation theories. The core mission for the SuperWASP cameras (www.superwasp.org) is the discovery of transiting exoplanets. Analysis of the 6.7 million light curves from the La Palma camera has revealed ~450 sources that have transit- like light curves and other properties that may be consistent with late type stars. Intermediate resolution spectroscopy of these objects is the most efficient way to confirm spectral types and eliminate stellar sized binary components and some line of sight companions.
