Title: The population of K-selected galaxies at 2<z<3

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that galaxies at 2<$z$<3 can be selected efficiently in the rest-frame optical. As most of these K- selected galaxies are very faint in the rest-frame ultra-violet they complement samples selected by the well known Lyman break technique. Studies of these red z$>2 galaxies have been hampered by the lack of deep multi-wavelength data over sufficiently large fields. We are remedying this situation in the joint Yale/Chile MUSYC near-IR project, which consists of a deep public ISPI survey of three Southern fields. Observations for two fields have been completed, while the third and final 10^\prime$\times10^\prime MUSYC field, CW1255, was partially observed in 2005A. Here we propose to complete the JHK imaging of CW1255 down to the depth of the other two fields. The CW1255 field already has fully reduced deep UBVRIz images, and shallow JHK data. Together the three MUSYC fields will provide high quality public optical and near-IR imaging over an area of ~eq400 arcmin^2, a factor of ~6 larger than the existing VLT imaging in Chandra Deep Field South. Our aims are to 1) measure the surface density and field- to-field variation of K_s$<21.5 near-IR selected galaxies at 2<$z$<3; 2) determine their clustering amplitude and thereby constrain their halo mass; 3) determine their luminosity function as function of their properties, such as colors and stellar mass.
