Title: Imaging the Galactic Bulge

Abstract: We propose to image with the 4m Blanco MOSAIC-II imager an area of b,l = 4x8 degrees both +0.5 degrees above and 0.5 degrees below the Galactic plane, centered on the Galactic Center. This Bulge survey will complement our proposed XMM/Newton survey of the same area. It will allow us to identify counterparts to the new X-ray sources that will be discovered in our proposed XMM Bulge survey and those that are being discovered by the existing RXTE and INTEGRAL surveys of the Galactic Bulge. It will allow us to study the population of X-ray binaries, study rare systems such as eclipsing black hole and neutron star systems and the faint population of ultra-compact X-ray binaries which are prime targets for gravitational wave radiation detectors such as LISA. Furthermore, this optical survey complements the planned near-IR survey of the same area by UKIRT and the optical survey planned by ESO (which will cover a larger area but will not be as deep as our proposed survey).
