Title: Carnegie Supernova Project: K-band Imaging and Spectroscopy: Semester 2

Abstract: The discovery of the acceleration of the local universe and the associated dark energy was only possible due to the careful calibration of local Type Ia supernovae pioneered by the Calan/Tololo Supernova Survey. Our data were also key in the studies of distances to core- collapse supernovae using the EPM and ``standard candle'' methods. The next step in the cosmology requires higher internal precision of the photometry and spectrophotometry in order to measure the equation of state parameter w and its time derivative w'. We have reformed our group as the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP), secured NSF funding, and major telescope support from the OCIW observatory Las Campanas. We have built a dual optical and near-IR imager which is allocated ~200n per year on the LCO 1m telescope. We are seeking NOAO telescope support of the CSP to fill in the two areas where we do not have extensive coverage at LCO - the K-band imaging and spectrophotometry of nearby SNe. \it This proposal will cover the CSP observing period Feb-May 2006.
