Title: Relating Lyman-break and SCUBA Galaxies: A Lyman-break Survey in the SCUBA/BLAST Region.
Abstract: We propose to complete deep MOSAIC U-band imaging of a 0.5-degree region which is the target of a on-going SCUBA survey (allocated 180 shifts on JCMT in '02-'05) by a large UK/American consortium. This field will also be mapped at far-IR wavelengths by the BLAST experiment, providing long-wavelength photometric redshifts for dusty, ultraluminous galaxies out to z~5. This proposal requests time to complete UR imaging, to complement existing BVI data, of this field to allow us to photometrically select less-active and less-obscured galaxies and AGN at similar redshifts. We will relate these two apparently unconnected populations through their relative clustering and through the identification of common sources and overdensities. A longer term goal is to use spectroscopy of the luminous z>2 AGN we identify in this field to probe the influence of winds and outflows from the ultraluminous SCUBA galaxies on their surrounding IGM and the young galaxies which are being formed there.
