Title: Optical Imaging of Nearby Galaxies in the Chandra Archive

Abstract: \it Chandra X-ray Observatory, with its unprecedented resolution and sensitivity, is able to provide X-ray images of galaxies at tens of Mpc away, yet clearly resolving point sources from diffuse emission. To date, Chandra has observed ~100 galaxies within 30 Mpc with exposure times greater than 20 ks. We intend to use this Chandra Archive of Nearby Galaxies to characterize the X-ray properties and to determine the origin of X-ray emission from a large number of galaxies with different morphological types with or without nuclear activity (AGN). Optical and IR broad-band and H(alpha) images of these galaxies are needed to reveal the underlying stellar content and interstellar structures in order to aid the interpretation of the X-ray emission. We will use available images from the 2MASS survey and data products from the SIRTF Legacy Program SINGS. For galaxies without suitable optical images, we will obtain BVR&H(alpha) images using our Mount Laguna 1m telescope for northern galaxies, and here we request CTIO 0.9m telescope time to image the southern galaxies.
