Title: A deep survey of the low surface brightness environment of nearby galaxies
Abstract: We propose a pilot program to investigate the faint and low surface brightness environment of a sample of nearby, Milky Way equivalent galaxies. With our deep imaging survey we will investigate the assembly and evolution of galaxies by determining: [1mm] \phantom.... \parbox16cm 1) the statistics of minor tidal interactions and low surface brightness streamers occurring around bright galaxies and their typical orbits, 2) the distribution and luminosity function of star forming dwarf satellite galaxies surrounding bright galaxies down to the faintest luminosities for known Milky Way satellites, 3) the nature of galactic stellar disk truncation by comparing the outer light distributions of face-on and edge-on galaxies, 4) the distribution of star formation occurring in the bright galaxies, especially in the faint outer regions beyond truncation, and determine whether star formation activity is enhanced by minor interactions, and 5) the structure of the red thick disks and halos that surround most disk galaxies. [1mm] We request 4 nights of Kitt Peak 4 m time to prove our concept on 8 galaxies and to set up our data pipeline in order to be ready for a NOAO Survey proposal request next year.
