Title: Infrared Spectroscopy of 2MASS Selected Red AGN
Abstract: We propose near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 2MASS- selected AGNs. These AGNs are redder than AGN selected from optical surveys and probably represent a sample with heavier extinction. The numbers of these objects also suggest that the number of AGN may be substantially underestimated. Our proposed observations should measure several near-infrared hydrogen recombination lines in the target AGN. The ratios of these lines will measure the extinction to the line emitting regions. Additionally, the widths should reveal if there is an optically-obscured broad-line region (as suggested by recent polarization studies).
