Title: Mineralogical characterization of V-type asteroids
Abstract: Aim of this proposal is to perform near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the different classes of V-type asteroids. V-Type asteroids are basaltic asteroids very rare among the asteroid population: they are spectrally similar to Vesta (the only known differentiated asteroid) and to the basaltic achondrite meteorites, specifically the eucrites, diogenites and howardites, known as HED meteorites. It was believed that these asteroids are fragments of Vesta, but the recent discovery of some V-type not dynamically linked to Vesta raises the problem of their origin. This topic has been the centre of an intense debate over the last years, trying to establish the parent body of these asteroids and of the HED meteorites. Most of these asteroids have been observed only in the visible range. The range from 0.8 to 2.5 micron, encompassing the 1 and 2 micron pyroxene features, allows a precise mineralogical characterization of these asteroids: this characterization is important to settle the question if they originate from the same body (4) Vesta or we must search for the evidence of another differentiated minor planet.
