Title: A UV survey to probe interactions between galaxies, QSOs and the IGM at z~3

Abstract: Inevitably, the next generation of galaxy surveys will routinely sample the Universe at z~3 in the same way that SDSS and 2dF have mapped the local Universe. The crucial issue is the choice of field where these surveys will be made. Here we propose to make deep UBRI surveys to select ~ 10000 z~3 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) via UV dropout in 6 fields containing bright z\ga3 QSOs. Using the wide field of VLT VIMOS to measure redshifts for these LBGs we can then explore the interaction between the newly-formed galaxies and the IGM as probed by the QSO absorption spectrum. Other uses for the data include studies of the QSO-LBG environment and feedback at z~3, searches for UVX B<25 z<2.5 QSOs, and, even in the absence of spectral data, a precise measurement of the real-space LBG correlation function at z~3.
