Title: Constraining the X-ray evolution of starburst galaxies

Abstract: Deep X-ray surveys with \it Chandra have demonstrated beyond any doubt the emergence of star-forming galaxies at faint flux limits (~10^-16\rm cgs). However, our knowledge on the X-ray evolution of these systems remains incomplete with no direct observational constrain todate. We propose to address this issue using HYDRA to obtain spectroscopy for (mu)Jy radio sources detected in an unparalleled deep and homogeneous radio survey (limiting flux density S_1.4=60(mu)Jy) combined with a deep (50 ks) \it XMM pointing. The proposed observations will complement this unique X-ray/radio dataset to provide an unbiased radio selected starburst sample with redshift information, free from AGN contamination (e.g emission line ratios) that can be used to: (i) provide the first observational constrain to the X-ray evolution of starburst galaxies to z~0.3 and (ii) estimate their contribution to the XRB.
