Title: A Stellar Census of the SMC
Abstract: We propose to carry out a ~ 20 square degree survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud using the CTIO 4m with the MOSAIC camera. Our proposed survey will achieve an unprecedented combination of area (coverage of the entire galaxy) and depth (accurate photometry of the ancient main sequence turnoff). Our primary goal will be to obtain deep photometry of most stars at or above the ancient main sequence turnoff (which will be possible outside the most crowded fields), allowing for a complete determination of the star formation history of the SMC. Our large coverage area will serve to improve the statistics from our earlier, inconclusive study, as well as improving our understanding of population distributions within the SMC. Given the various dynamical models of the Magellanic system, the star formation history we measure should permit discrimination between the dynamical models, as well as providing insight into the effects of interactions on galaxy evolution.
