Title: A Large Scale Survey of the Low-mass Young Population in the Orion OB1 Association
Abstract: We propose to identify large numbers of low-mass (~ 0.8 - 0.15 M_\odot) pre-main sequence stars, in the older (~ 10 Myr) Orion OB1a sub-association, among candidates selected from our large scale optical variability survey of the Orion OB1 Association. This work will provide a new step in studies of young stellar populations, not possible with the presently very limited number of stars of similar age in nearby associations like TW Hya. The Ori 1a stars will constitute the first numerous sample of young low mass stars, in a dispersed environment, at the critical age when disk coagulation into larger bodies like planetesimals and planets is expected to occur. This dataset will be an important reference for comparison with younger (~ 1 Myr old) stars in denser, more embedded regions, and with stars in 10 Myr old young open clusters. It will set the stage to explore protoplanetary disk evolution in sparse regions and investigate the effects of environment on disk survival. In addition, our sample will provide new insight into how dense young clusters evolve and disperse during their first 10 Myr.
