Title: Long Period Variables in NGC 3368
Abstract: We propose to obtain RI photometry of the galaxy NGC 3368, in order to look for Long Period Variables. These stars follow a Period- Luminosity relation and therefore can be used to derive distances. The LPVs distance scale still needs to be tested and compared to other reliable distance indicators. This particular galaxy offers the best opportunity for such a test. It will allow to tie the LPV distance scale to the Cepheid and SN Ia distances since there is a Cepheid distance and SN 1998bu was located in this galaxy. This project will also help to assess the usefulness of LPVs as a distance indicator when compared to Cepheids, in terms of distance range, accuracy, and reliability.
