Title: The 2MASS Redshift Survey

Abstract: We propose to measure the local galaxy density field by measuring redshifts for a complete sample of ~ 150,000 galaxies over the whole sky. The sample is being selected from the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey to a limiting magnitude of K_s=12.2. This represents more than an order of magnitude improvement over the best existing sample, both in numbers of galaxies and in the manner in which they are selected. When completed, this survey will not only provide the best ever density field, but will also serve as the basis for studies of the galaxy velocity field (through follow-on Tully-Fisher and fundamental plane measurements) but will also provide a wealth of data on galaxy luminosity functions, clustering statistics and the NIR properties of galaxies.
