Title: Emission Line Properties of Active Galaxies
Abstract: We propose to use HexPak IFU to study the emission line properties of $sim$ 30 $zsim0.1$ galaxies with active galactic nuclei (AGN) as suggested by their X-ray emission from XMM-Newton. SDSS spectra of these galaxies were used in determining that these X-ray AGN are classified as primarily star-forming based on the emission-line diagnostic diagrams, and not AGN. SDSS fibers are 3$''$ wide, so they may include contaminating emission from star forming regions outside of the core, leading to misclassification. In order to better understand the emission line properties of these galaxies and thus the robustness of widely used emission line diagnostics, we propose to use HexPak with its 1$''$ IFU fibers to spectroscopically differentiate between the cores of these galaxies and their surroundings. We received 4 nights in Fall 2018 for this project and opened for 1/2 of one night but the bulk of our observations were prevented by monsoon conditions. Additionally, we received 3.5 nights in Spring 2019 for this project and were similarly only able to open for 1/2 of one night.
