Title: WIYN ODI Imaging of Selected Dark Galaxies
Abstract: We propose to obtain deep WIYN ODI imaging of two sets of faint extragalactic targets. One set of objects are “Almost Dark” galaxies selected from the ALFALFA blind HI survey catalog. These are extremely low surface brightness (LSB), gas-rich galaxies that have a wide range of possible masses and distances and have either no optical counterpart at all, or have only a faint optical counterpart, in existing survey data. We will use our WIYN observations to measure the optical properties of these objects, and combine our data with HI synthesis mapping data to investigate the nature of these mysterious objects and explore how they fit into our overall picture of how galaxy formation and evolution proceed in the Universe. The second set of targets are nearby dwarf galaxy candidates selected from the PAndAS catalog. These objects were identified as possible stellar overdensities in PAndAS imaging and may be Local Group dwarf galaxies, so our goal is to obtain deep, multi-filter imaging with ODI and carry out a thorough search for evidence of a stellar population at the relevant locations.
