Title: Late-time Near-infrared Reconnaissance of Supernovae

Abstract: Recent discoveries of major eruptions preluding supernova (SN) explosions within one year of core collapse have disrupted long held notions of stellar evolution pertaining to mass loss through steady winds. Thus far only a handful of cases have been observed, but it is widely believed that these extreme events are indicative of a poorly understood yet critical phenomenon occurring in {it all} core collapse SN progenitor stars at different scales. The embarrassing disconnect between theory and observation presents a real problem for many fields of research that depend on the predictions of stellar evolution models. Pinpointing the physical mechanisms behind these eruptions requires an unbiased sample of consistently monitored events that can robustly characterize the timescale between intensified mass loss and core collapse as a function of SN type. To this end we request WIYN-WHIRC observations to image nearby SN explosions 1-10 years after explosion to identify interaction between the SN blast wave and circumstellar material through distinct observational signatures that are only found at near-infrared wavelengths.
