Title: Astrometry of Long-Period Comets and Cometary Fragmentation Investigation
Abstract: We propose to use the HDI on WIYN 0.9-meter to make astrometric observations of long-period comets (LPCs). We also aim to search for fragmentation events of selected long-period and short-period comets (SPCs). Upon the discovery of a fragmentation event, we will carefully make astrometric observations of the fragments. The results will a) permit better orbit determination and nongravitational force models, b) explore the origin reservoir(s), c) enable future narrow-field investigations with other telescopes of larger apertures (e.g., HST), d) allow determination of a comet fragmentation rate for both long and short-period comets, and e) allow studies of the dynamical evolution of the fragments and the long-period comets.
