Title: DECam Dwarf Galaxy Survey
Abstract: We propose the DECam Dwarf Galaxy Survey (DDGS), a deep, multi- component Blanco/DECam survey of $>11,500$~deg$^2$ of the southern sky to better understand the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies in a cosmological context. DDGS will add new deep observations while using the significant archive of existing data to enable dwarf galaxy detection over a broad range in luminosity, from the faintest dwarf spheroidal galaxies ($L_star sim 10^3 L_odot$) to analogs of the Large Magellanic Cloud ($L_star sim 10^ L_odot$), in diverse environments throughout the Local Volume. DDGS consists of: (1) a high- Galactic-latitude wide-area survey of ,500$~deg$^2$ to a depth of $g sim 23.5$, (2) a contiguous Magellanic Cloud periphery survey of ,075$~deg$^2$ at a depth of $g sim 24.2$, and (3) a deep targeted survey of 0$~deg$^2$ to a depth of $i sim 25.0$ around six isolated Local Volume dwarf galaxies. These three observational components will provide complementary insights into the abundance and properties of dwarf galaxies around hosts at different mass scales and in a variety of environments. Combined with a unified theoretical framework, DDGS will enable exploration of the dependence of satellite properties on effects of reionization, host halo properties, and environment, offering essential insights into the galaxy--halo connection.
