Title: Sweeping Away the Dust: Understanding Attenuation up to the Peak of Cosmic Star Formation
Abstract: Obtaining a detailed census of galaxy properties through cosmic time is crucial to our understanding of galaxy evolution. However, large uncertainties (factors $sim-10) lie in how dust attenuation corrections are applied. This issue can be resolved with the $HST$ WFC3 IR Spectroscopic Parallel (WISP) survey, which acquired dust-sensitive emission line diagnostics (Balmer decrement; $mathrmalpha/mathrmbeta$) for $sim$^3$ galaxies at .75<z<1.5$. We propose obtaining $u'$ and $g'$-band observations for 20 deep fields in the WISP survey, which already have ancillary data at longer wavelengths from $HST$ and $SST$. These new data provide crucial rest-frame ultraviolet observations, where attenuation is the strongest, and allows us to constrain key issues regarding dust attenuation in galaxies at $zsim1$: 1) the star/dust geometry giving rise to the attenuation, 2) the average dust attenuation curve over the entire far- ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelength range, and 3) the strength of the 2175~AA dust feature in the attenuation curve. These observations will also enable us to obtain significantly improved derivations of physical properties for galaxies in these fields for additional WISP science.
