Title: Finding the galaxies associated with WHIM absorption

Abstract: We recently discovered a new, rare X-ray absorption line from the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) toward the quasar PG1116+215. The nature of the absorber is as yet unknown due to its relatively large redshift of 0.09, which is more distant than the best currently available deep galaxy samples (the SDSS survey). With the proposed observations we aim to map the spatial distribution and luminosities of the galaxies near the absorber. Our goal is to apply our WHIM tools to the galaxy data to detect the expected large scale galaxy filament near the absorber and to construct the luminosity density field around the absorber. We will use these tools to estimate physical quantities, such as the sight-line column density, geometry and baryon density of the absorber. These results will be valuable for solving the cosmological missing baryon problem.
