Title: Galaxies in Transition: Interactions in the Ursa Major Super Group

Abstract: We propose to use ODI to obtain deep images of interacting galaxies in the Ursa Major galaxy super group. The Ursa Major system is falling towards Virgo and thus is a laboratory for studies of preprocessing. Galaxies in clusters differ from systems of similar mass in the lower density field. Some of these properties, such as the overall tendency for cluster galaxies to be dynamically hot, requires a factor that affects some galaxies before they enter the cluster. This is usually understood in terms of “pre-processing”, environmental factors that impact galaxies as they are infalling to clusters. Although the details of pre-processing are yet to be clearly identified, it most likely takes the form of galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-group interactions as galaxy groups approach clusters. Our project thus focuses on detecting and mapping stellar debris associated with interactions in the UMa super group to place constraints on preprocessing of dwarf and giant galaxies.
