Title: WIYN ODI Imaging of Ultra-Compact High Velocity Clouds and Almost-Dark Objects from ALFALFA

Abstract: We propose to obtain follow-up WIYN ODI imaging of objects discovered by the ALFALFA neutral hydrogen survey. The combination of ALFALFA + WIYN allows us to probe the extreme low-mass end of the galaxy and HI mass functions and to investigate the complex interplay between low-mass dark matter halos, their baryonic components, and the gas and stellar processes that shape them. Most of the targets for the 2018A time are Ultra-Compact High Velocity Clouds (UCHVCs), which have kinematics and sizes that make them likely to be low-mass dwarf galaxies within the Local Group or its environs, but which have no optical counterpart in existing catalogs. The prototype UCHVC is Leo P, a gas- rich dwarf galaxy at 1.6 Mpc that is the lowest-mass star-forming galaxy known and was identified by following up an ALFALFA HI detection with WIYN. The remaining targets for 2018A are ”Almost Dark” galaxies, which also have no obvious optical counterpart but a wider range of possible distances and masses than the UCHVCs. From our master list of UCHVCs and Almost-Dark sources, we have put together a list of 30 objects that need ODI imaging in 2018A. The ODI data will be used to detect and study the optical emission and stellar populations associated with these HI sources.
