Title: Magnetic Field Evolution During the Pre-Main Sequence
Abstract: We will begin to map out the potential transition from primordial magnetic fields to fields generated by an internal dynamo during the evolution of a young star by measuring the magnetic field properties of stars in the age range of 10-100 Myr by observing several stars in nearby young (8-50 Myr) moving groups. The K band contain numerous highly magnetically sensitive atomic lines, notably several Ti I lines, which are strong in late type stars. We will use these along with simultaneously observed magnetically insensitive lines to measure the strength and filling factor of the fields on our targets stars. Due to its excellent sensitivity and very broad wavelength grasp, IGRINS on Gemini South is uniquely situated to perform this research.
