Title: Characterizing Low Mass Stars in the TESS Northern Continuous Viewing Zone

Abstract: Following textit{Kepler's} lead, tess promises to unveil thousands of new transiting exoplanets around the brightest stars across almost the entire sky. The prominence of M and K dwarfs in the galaxy, and the higher occurrence rate of small planets in short orbital periods around these stars, make them ideal targets for tess. Characterization of stars in the tess candidate target list was primarily done with photometry, yielding average radius uncertainties around 25% for M and K dwarfs. We seek to characterize the properties of the highest priority M and K dwarfs in the tess northern continuous viewing zone using red optical spectra (5,000 AA--10,000 AA) from Hydra on WIYN in order to better constrain stellar parameters for these stars. This will yield better estimates of stellar effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity, reducing uncertainty in radius measurements to $sim$10%. Consequently, when tess data become available, uncertainties in the radii of transiting exoplanets will be minimized. Spectra from this project will be made available to the community on the ExoFOP-tess website for quicker planet confirmation when tess data arrive.
