Title: Precise orbit and distant activity of comet Hale-Bopp

Abstract: We propose to obtain new photometry and astrometry of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) with Gemini-S/GMOS. Photometry of the comet at ~40 au will either confirm prior data that suggest this comet's activity ceased around 30 au from the Sun, or indicate that cometary mass loss continues at record distances. Astrometry of the comet will provide critical support for future spectroscopy of surface ice with the James Webb Space Telescope.

Program Type: Standard/Solar System
