Title: Radii of late type-dwarfs, exoplanet hosts, and exoplanet host candidates
Abstract: We propose to use the CHARA Array in single baseline mode to measure fundamental properties of late-type dwarfs and exoplanet host stars. We aim to address the well-documented discrepancy between theory and observation: directly determined radii exceed theory predictions by ~5- 10% especially for late-type dwarfs. Our results indicate that a change of the numerical value of the mixing-length parameter may reduce or eliminate radius discrepancies with stellar models. Additionally, we target the ever-growing number of stars known to host extrasolar planets / substellar companions, where the assumed stellar properties determine extent and location of the system habitable zones. Stellar radii enable model-independent measurements of radii of transiting planets, providing full orbital and astrophysical system characterizations. The principal scientific goals of this project in combination with our ongoing survey are to (1) significantly increase the number of low-mass stars with precise radius measurements, and (2) provide insights into exoplanetary environments by understanding the nature of the parent stars, such as stellar size, surface temperature, luminosity, planetary radiation environment, habitable zone, etc.
