Title: An Atlas of Time-varying phenomena in External Galaxies

Abstract: We propose a series of observations of M83 and Cen-A with the Dark Energy Camera that will provide a comprehensive sample of transient and variable sources brighter than $M_sim -4.5$ in those galaxies. This proposal is designed to mitigate the limitations of previous studies of transient and variable phenomena {it wrt} the range of stellar populations sampled, the number of passbands, and the cadence, among others. This panchromatic survey, with a carefully planned cadence of these two large galaxies with their diverse stellar populations will catalog observational features of extra-galactic variable sources that are very similar to what LSST will obtain, especially passbands and time- scale coverage. Such a catalog will produce a `training set' against which LSST alerts can be compared for early characterization. Our proposed atlas will also enable many independent science investigations: e.g., multi-band period-luminosity relations of Miras, and of red supergiant variables, possible detection of exotic objects like lensing from neutron stars. This team is specifically interested in the detection and study of fast novae in these galaxies, whose hitherto largely unconstrained rates are intrinsically interesting in the context of possible supernova Ia progenitors and for constraining the white dwarf mass function in novae.
