Title: The connection of wind structures to observed X-ray variability in massive stars

Abstract: We request one night (10 hours) of time to utilize the CTIO 1.5 m telescope and CHIRON spectrograph in queue mode. The observations will surround an exposure from the 840 ks of time our team has been awarded with the {it Chandra X-ray Observatory} for the massive star $zeta$ Pup. This target is a keystone in understanding massive stellar winds with its high mass loss rate and luminosity, while the evolution of the star likely comes from past binary interactions. We will use {it BRITE- Constellation} photometry and these spectra to create a model of surface inhomogeneities and co-rotating interaction regions in the inner wind. From these models, we will compare directly the X-ray variations taken over short time periods to those measured in the optical. Such observations will provide strong constraints on the production of X-rays in the shocked wind environments of massive stars.
