Title: Probing the Galactic Center's Central Molecular Zone using CO

Abstract: Our high-resolution spectra of H3+ (3.5-4.0um) and CO (2.33-2.35um), to date mainly from Gemini South / Phoenix, are radically altering the understanding of the types and distribution of gaseous environments in the Central Molecular Zone [CMZ, radius ~150pc] of the Galactic center. Our initial spectra, using as background sources bright stars located in the central 30 pc of the CMZ, revealed that much of those sightlines are filled with a previously unknown environment: warm, low density, and outflowing gas. To test whether the entire CMZ contains such gas and to understand its properties better, we have identified bright objects with featureless spectra [thus suitable for observing the weak insterstellar lines] on other sightlines toward the CMZ, but outside of the central 30pc. We have taken spectra of some of them. The new spectra are consistent with a large volume filling factor for this warm low density environment. However, observations on additional sightlines, filling large gaps in the coverage of the CMZ, are still required. IGRINS' wide wavelength coverage and sensitivity, are ideally suited to obtaining the remaining 2.3-2.4um CO spectra and here we request time to do that.
