Title: Four-Micron Imaging of Two Cool Binary Systems

Abstract: We propose to obtain L' imaging with NIRI at Gemini North of two binaries, each with 450 - 600K components with likely masses of 10 -- 30 Jupiters. The separations of the systems are 0.5" and 0.8", allowing them to be resolved in IQ20 conditions at airmass < 1.5. Resolved photometry is available for lambda < 3 microns, but 50 - 75% of the energy from late-T and Y0 dwarfs is emitted at longer wavelengths. The binaries have been selected for JWST Guaranteed Time and proposed Early Release Science observations. The short observations proposed here will provide a quality check for early JWST NIRSpec data and enable the JWST resolved spectra to be flux calibrated. The flux-calibrated spectra will be made available to JWST Cycle 2 PIs. The NIRI data are scientifically valuable in their own right, as observations of coeval and same-composition systems place tight constraints on both atmospheric and evolutionary models of brown dwarfs and giant planets.
