Title: Ionized Gas Kinematics and the Chemical Evolution of Nearby Galaxies

Abstract: Fundamentally, the observed gas-phase metallicities in nearby galaxies should correspond to the production and release of the products of stellar nucleosynthesis and, thus, provide a robust trace of galaxy formation and evolution. However, complications associated with mixing times, outflow and infall, and the rotational dependence on expected stellar yields, make these trends more ambiguous. The goal of this proposal is to obtain kinematic data to constrain self-consistent chemical enrichment histories of a modest sample of nearby gas-rich low mass galaxies. Specifically, we will compare the estimate of the kinetic energy input from the derived star formation history and the observed kinetic energy of the ionized and neutral gas at the present epoch. These values, in combination with the calculated dynamical mass (potential well) of each system, will provide insight into the likelihood of significant metal loss through outflow of enriched material and metal dilution through the inflow of pristine gas. The present proposal focuses on the two galaxies in the sample which are located in the fall sky: NGC6822 and IC1613.
