Title: WIYN Spectroscopy of Gamma-Ray-Loud Compact Radio AGN

Abstract: The Radio Fundamental Catalog (RFC) is a list of over 12,000 radio loud AGN that is complete over the celestial sphere down to a limiting flux of ~50 mJy. All of these sources are sufficiently compact for sub- milliarcsecond resolution imaging with VLBI, and many are currently being observed with the VLBA as part of the MOJAVE program. The RFC has been very useful in finding associations for gamma-ray sources detected by the Fermi LAT instrument above 100 MeV, with 80% of the sources in the 3rd Fermi AGN catalog being in the RFC. The redshift information in the RFC is far from complete, however, especially for the gamma-ray loud AGN, of which only 2/3 have spectroscopic redshifts. The latter data are essential for investigating the luminosity functions of AGN in the gamma-ray and radio regimes, and for measuring the speeds and luminosities of jet features as tracked by the VLBA. Here we propose a pilot program to obtain spectra of ten bright gamma-ray loud AGN in the RFC (PanStarrs g mag between 17 and 18) using the HYDRA instrument at WIYN, in order to measure emission line strengths, obtain spectroscopic redshifts and make AGN optical classifications.
