Title: What Are Type-Ia Supernovae?
Abstract: Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) currently serve as the astrophysical backbone of the cosmic distance scale due to their property as cosmological standardizable candles (Phillips 1993). What is truly remarkable, is that despite their critical use in this capacity, we do not currently know a) what their progenitors are and b) what physical mechanism makes them explode. Here we propose to address this outstanding issue by building a sample of high-signal-to-noise, late-time, nebular-phase spectroscopic LBT/MODS observations of a local sample of Type Ia Supernova. In particular, by measuring the velocities and line profiles of the supernova ejecta we can constrain the kinematic of the explosion and distinguish between progenitor models.
