Title: Optical ugriz mapping of SINGS/KINGFISH galaxies

Abstract: We propose a detailed study of the variation in the dust attenuation curve in the SINGS/KINGFISH sample, one of the best studied samples of local galaxies. We will model the ultraviolet to near-infrared spectrum with our stellar population synthesis code to constrain the dust attenuation curve on resolved scales of 100 pc. The variations in the shape of the dust attenuation law for this sample of resolved regions will allow us to better understand the variation of dust properties with galactic environment, metal abundance and galaxy type. Knowledge on the dust component is vital to recover the intrinsic stellar spectrum of galaxies across the Universe. Due to the lack of a complete dataset for all sample galaxies, spectral energy distribution (SED) models are incapable of characterizing the star formation history and retrieving the shape of the dust attenuation curve due to model degeneracies. To have a homogeneous and uniform dataset for all SINGS/KINGFISH galaxies, we applied for optical ugriz observations for 16 galaxies and u-band data for 12 galaxies. However, due to bad weather conditions during both 2016B runs, we did not acquire the needed photometric data. Therefore, we resubmit this proposal to be able to complete our project, and apply for ugriz observations for 11 galaxies and u-band data for 7 galaxies. A complete dataset for the SINGS/KINGFISH sample will have a great legacy value.
