Title: Spectroscopic Confirmation of the Brightest Galaxies at z=4
Abstract: We propose to observe 46 galaxy candidates that are among the UV-brightest Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) in the early universe (z~4). These galaxies were discovered using deep optical and far-infrared imaging covering the HETDEX/SHELA Field, a 18 deg^2 equatorial region within SDSS Stripe-82. GMOS spectra of these galaxies will spectroscopically validate their photometric redshifts and mitigate contamination by active galactic nuclei. These measurements will further our study of the bright-end of the LBG luminosity function and place new constraints on models of feedback and quenching in massive galaxies. We request 14.85 hours to observe 10 masks with GMOS.
