Title: The detection of polarized radiation from brown dwarf companions to nearby main sequence stars

Abstract: We request 6.0 hours using GPI’s H-band polarimetry mode to obtain the first detection of polarized light from a brown dwarf companion to a main sequence star. Observational and theoretical studies of field L-dwarfs indicate that these objects produce polarization signals of order 1% in the near infrared due to rotationally-induced oblateness, patchy and dusty atmospheres, or a combination of these effects. Recent observations with GPI verify that such a signal is well within the instrument’s polarization sensitivity. Such a detection will unlock a new observable for the characterization of brown dwarf and exoplanet atmospheres.
