Title: The Gemini North search for the first QSOs

Abstract: QSOs are the most luminous, non-transient objects in the universe and are the only sources that can be studied in detail within the first Gyr of the Big Bang (z>6). However, despite significant use of resources and efforts, until recently the most distant QSO was at z=7.08 (and the only one known at z>7 for more than half a decade). We here propose to push the redshift barrier using Gemini to discover some of the first QSOs that formed in the universe, visible from the Northern sky. This builds in our recent successful strategy using Magellan in the Southern hemisphere, which resulted in a new QSO redshift record holder at z>7.5, in just our first observing campaign. The proposed GMOS (Band 3), NIRI, and GNIRS observations will be critical to unveil the earliest QSOs, which will constitute a unique sample for a plethora of multiwavelength studies, including observations with JWST and the 30m-class telescopes.
