Title: Photometric Imaging of the Spotted Star UX Ari

Abstract: Strong magnetic fields affect stellar properties and evolution and manifest themselves on stellar surfaces as starspots and flares. For stars other than the Sun, our understanding of stellar magnetic fields is hindered by limited spatial resolution, allowing only for the detection of large starspots with traditional observational methods. Because the large starspots cannot be adequately described by theories of sunspots, a goal of this study will be to obtain an understanding of spot structure and distribution on spotted stars. Continuing our successful efforts to image the surfaces of active stars, we propose to obtain multi-bandpass observations of UX Ari, a close binary system with a spotted primary star that has exhibited a covering fraction in excess of 50%. These light curves will be used to reconstruct the spotted stellar surface, which will complement simultaneous Doppler and interferometric imaging. These observations will help validate the reliability of interferometric imaging. Additionally, the absolute photometric observations obtained through this proposal will be used to constrain the temperature of UX Ari and its starspots.
