Title: A Complete Volume-Limited 50 pc Sample of White Dwarfs
Abstract: We plan to construct a virtually complete, volume-limited sample of all white dwarfs stars within 50 pc of the sun. We have previously studied local samples encompassing 20 pc and 25 pc, which contained only a few hundred stars. The new 50 pc sample will be based on the planned Nov. 2017 Gaia data release of highly accurate parallaxes, and is expected to contain ~2400 white dwarfs. As with our smaller samples these stars will require spectroscopic observations to determine spectral type, temperatures, gravities, masses and ages. The sample proposed here includes stars for which we currently have good reason to believe are within 50 pc, but lack spectroscopy. We already possess observations of approximately 1000 stars in the 50 pc sample and wish to complete observations of the currently known stars in advance of the Gaia data release.
