Title: Confirming Obscured SN Candidates with Gemini

Abstract: The core-collapse supernova rate is inextricably linked to a number of important areas of astrophysics including star formation and galactic chemical evolution. If a significant number of supernovae are obscured by dust, rate estimates from optical surveys will only be upper limits. The SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transient Survey (SPIRITS) is uncovering a population of obscured SNe in very nearby galaxies. These sources require prompt follow-up in the near-infrared, however, to confirm their nature. Here we request 2 3-hour standard ToO triggers, one on each of Gemini-North and Gemini-South, to obtain near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of newly discovered SPIRITS candidates. The confirmation of obscured SNe will allow for the quantification of the fraction of SNe in nearby galaxies missed by optical surveys, and could have important implications for our understanding of the supernova rate.
