Title: Speckle imaging of Giant Star with a Long-term RV Trend

Abstract: A radial velocity (RV) survey for intermediate-mass giants has been in operation for over a decade at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO). The OAO survey has revealed that many giant stars show long-term linear RV accelerations (RV trends), which indicates the presence of either a giant planet or a stellar companion at a larger distance. High contrast speckle imaging allows us to detect the presence or nonexistence of stellar-mass companions to these giants, so we can separate stelllar-induced accelerations from those caused by giant planets. Here we propose to use NESSI at WIYN to take speckle images of giant stars with RV trends identified from OAO RV survey. From these observations, we can directly detect and study the stellar companions responsible for accelerating their host stars, or rule out scenarios in which such accelerations are caused by stellar binary companions with statistical confidence. This work will help constrain giant planet occurrence rate around giant stars and advance our understanding of giant planet distribution around giant stars. vspace
