Title: Cometary Orbital Trends
Abstract: We propose a 1-night program to image 12 comets with SOAR/SOI in 2017A as part of our Cometary Orbital Trends project. Our primary targets are C/2012 K1 (Pan STARRS), 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak (TGK), and 71P/Clark. Comet K1 will be at a heliocentric distance of 10~au, and photometry of this comet will be diagnostic of the driver of activity (CO$_2$ or CO) at this large distance. Comets TGK and Clark will be near perihelion, and close to the Earth (0.2 to 0.6~au), allowing us to measure inner-coma structures for comparison with Spitzer- based imaging of their CO$_2$ comae, and dust color for comparison with our near-IR spectral survey of water ice in comets. Images and photometry of all targets will be incorporated into our project, which is following at least 22 comets (currently 12 Jupiter-family, 10 Oort cloud) over as wide a range of heliocentric distances and times as possible.
