Title: Stellar Population GeMology: Long Period Variables at High Metallicity in the Nearest Elliptical Galaxy
Abstract: Stellar evolution during the asymptotic giant branch phase, especially the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB), remains one of the outstanding uncertainties in stellar population synthesis modeling, especially at high metallicities. We have discovered that that the GeMS/GSAOI imaging system can resolve the metal-rich stellar population in the center of the nearby giant elliptical NGC 5128 (Cen A), and have identified an ideal field for GeMS AO observations. Models imply that the field should contain ~3000 TP-AGB stars in the form of Long Period Variables; we propose a multi-epoch short-observation monitoring program to constrain the TP-AGB lifetimes at high metallicities.
