Title: Determining the Flare Rate for a Disk-Hosting dM Star in the Carina Association

Abstract: We propose to observe the star WISEA J080822.18-644357.3 at high cadence in the U band with the 0.9-m telescope at CTIO, to determine a flare rate for the star, and observe a red-optical spectrum of this star with the COSMOS instrument on the Blanco 4-m telescope. This star, which has a photometry-based spectral type of M5.5V, was identified by the Disk Detective project as a disk-hosting star. It is also a candidate member of the Carina association, which has age $sim 45$ Myr. We will use the spectroscopy to derive an accurate spectral type and luminosity class, and measure age indicators. With the high-cadence photometry, we expect to observe $sim 100$ flares, with which we will determine the flare rate of this star, as well as typical flare energies. This will yield valuable info on the prevalence of energetic flares in late-type M-dwarf debris disk systems, and provide a key comparison to older M-dwarf stars of similar spectral type with planetary companions, such as Proxima Centauri.
